ABOUT LANDSLIDE RECORDING STUDIO

Locally Owned and Operated for 20 Years

A Note from Andrew Schatzberg, producer, owner

I’ve dedicated my life to music, and I’ve been writing, performing and recording music ever since I was a in elementary school, leading bands in early 90s and then into the 21st century. I’ve written and recorded music with talented bandmates and record producers in the past, and I’ve written many songs on my own with just a guitar and my voice.

I know what it’s like to be a working musician, and I know how important it is for caring people to buy into a vision and a project. This is the guiding principle of Landslide Studio, which I started in 2004. I love helping artists fulfill their vision for their music. And I’m fortunate to be able to do this in a state-of-the-art space in a quiet hillside neighborhood in Asheville, NC.

Since opening Landslide Studio, I’ve worked with countless local and national musicians – old and young and in between – who find their inspiration in many different styles of music. Working with them has been a gift to me, personally, and it has also prepared me to work with a variety of artists, including the Landsliders, the studio’s veteran in-house band that’s ready, willing, and able to help any artist fully realize their musical vision.

If you want to push the bounds of creativity for a full album, we’re here for it. If you want to record a song or two, or if you simply need a different mix of a song you recorded elsewhere, I can help with that, too. Give me a call, and I’d be happy to discuss the scope of your project to explore how we could collaborate.

In addition to music recording, my studio records commercials, voiceovers, and audiobooks. Some of our commercial clientele includes Disney, MTV, HBO, Discover Card, Fox Search Light, and NPR.

Thanks,

Andrew

Our Studio

THE STUDIO ITSELF

World-renowned architect and acoustician Russ Berger designed and engineered Landslide Recording Studio, which opened in 2004. High ceilings, open spaces, natural light, and clean lines are the basis of the design.

Landslide is known for a live room with 22-foot ceilings. The drum sounds explode in this room, which helps us capture amazing performances to createpowerful recordings. I love it when I see drummers sit down behind the kit for the first time in this room; some discover their instrument all over again, and it’s cool to witness.

Both the live room and control room feel like one large space, separated only by a large wall of glass. This lets musicians communicate quickly and efficiently with one another and the producer. The studio is filled with large windows, so the natural light floods the spaces during the day. You can gaze out at the overgrown garden or a mountain view while you’re tracking.

We carefully chose all the colors and lighting in the studio to create a warm and creative recording atmosphere. Even though the spaces are large and open, they still feel intimate. There are several isolation options in the studio. So, whether you want to track your entire band live or do mostly overdubs, we’re flexible. There’s a large isolation space with glass from floor to ceiling, which helps make isolation transparent. The control room is an accurately designed listening environment, allowing us to make good mixing decisions, which saves time and money.

Postscript: More Back Story

After years of recording in various settings, including basements, living rooms, hallways, small studios, and stages, I dreamed of building my own studio. In 2002, I left California and returned to Asheville, where I had lived in the early 90’s, to turn my studio dream into reality. As an artist and producer, I’ve worked most of my life refining my craft. I continually try to challenge myself and explore new ways to create compelling recordings.

Using the studio as an instrument and the magic of experimentation fascinate me still. I want nothing but the best for my clients, partly because the end product is a reflection of my work in some way, but mostly because I want my clients’ recording dreams to come true in the best possible ways.

~ ~ ~

Playing in rock bands in my 20s ultimately lead to running live sound at various venues, recording my own projects, and producing my own bands’ records. Eventually friends and friends of friends asked for help recording their projects, and my studio organically grew from there.

Before I started recording my own bands, we explored working with producers in professional studios. We tried to find a way to afford producing a record in an inspiring space where people would take us seriously and help us realize our sound. In each case, recording in a studio was either too expensive, or – when we did go for it – we found ourselves in ridiculous debt. These were frustrating experiences to say the least, but they eventually inspired me to build Landslide Studio.

When I settled in Asheville, I decided it was time to build my own recording studio. I wanted the design and the space to blow people away as soon as they walked in, because that’s what I wanted to experience as a musician. Then I wanted them to be continually surprised by the amount of thought, love, and energy I put into every aspect of this studio. And finally, I wanted to keep our rates affordable. Based on feedback from clients, I think we’ve succeeded on all counts.
