Our Studio

Landslide Recording Studio was acoustically engineered and designed by world-renowned architect and acoustician, Russ Berger. High ceilings, open spaces, natural light, and clean lines are the basis of the design.

Landslide is known for our live room with 22 foot ceilings.  The drum sounds explode in this room, which helps us capture amazing performances and powerful recordings.  (I love it when I see drummers sit down behind the kit for the first time in this room, and watch them discover their instrument all over again…)

Both the live room and control room feel like one large space, only separated by a wall of glass.  This lets musicians communicate quickly and efficiently with one another and the producer.

The studio is filled with large windows, so the natural light floods the rooms during the day.  You can gaze out at the overgrown garden or the North Carolina mountain views while you’re tracking.

All the colors and lighting in the studio have been carefully chosen to create a warm and creative recording atmosphere.  Even though the spaces are large and open, they still feel intimate.

There are several isolation options in the studio. So, whether you want to track your entire band live or do mostly overdubs, we’re flexible.   There’s a large isolation space with glass from floor to ceiling, which helps make isolation transparent.

The control room is an accurately designed listening environment.  This allows us to make good mixing decisions, which definitely saves time and money.

Postscript: The back story

Hello, Thank you for visiting our website.  I’m Andrew Schatzberg. I own and operate Landslide Studio.  It would be my pleasure to give you a tour of the studio or to host your next recording project.

After years of recording in various settings, I dreamed of building my own studio. In 2002, I left California and returned to Asheville to make it happen. As an artist and producer, I’ve worked most of my life refining my craft. I continually try to challenge myself and explore new ways of create compelling recordings. Using the studio as an instrument and the magic of experimentation, continues to fascinate me, even after decades of making music.

I started out playing in rock bands, which ultimately lead to running live sound, recording and producing.  Eventually friends, and friends of friends asked for help recording their projects and it just grew from there.  It was a natural progression.

Before I started recording my own bands, we explored working with producers in professional studios. We tried to find a way to afford producing a record in an inspiring space where people would take us seriously and help us realize our sound. In each case, recording in a studio was either too expensive, or, when we did go for it, we found ourselves in ridiculous debt. These were frustrating experiences to say the least, but they eventually inspired me to build Landslide Studio.

When I settled in Asheville, North Carolina, I decided it was time to build my own recording studio. I wanted the design and the space to blow people away as soon as they walked in. Then I wanted them to be continually surprised by the amount of thought, love, and energy we put into every aspect of this studio. And finally, I wanted to keep our rates affordable. Based on feedback from clients, I think we’ve succeeded on all counts…
